Matthew Gordon

Matthew Gordon is a British documentary and factual television Executive Producer and photographer whose work is centred on real people and real stories

BIOGRAPHY:
I work across television, photography and independent production, with a career spanning more than 25 years in factual television and documentary storytelling. Alongside my television work, I develop photography and film projects through Spontaneous Media. I was born in the 1970s when everyone had a story to tell. My influences ranged from the photojournalism of the Sunday Times Magazine in its heyday, to the music climbing the charts. I have taken photographs since my teens, and despite studying engineering at University spent much of my time in a darkroom and University TV studio.

PHOTOGRAPHY:
My Photography career began in Scotland when I spent two years as the photographic editor, journalist and photographer at the university newspaper: Gaudie. Since then I have studied  through adult education, The Royal Photographic Society - achieving an LRPS distinction, short courses at Camberwell school of art and the Tate Modern, as well as numerous workshops and photography events.

My pictures have been published in four collections and exhibited several times, including in 2017 as part of  the first Photography on a Postcard  exhibition and the Magnum Photos Print Swap with Martin Parr and David Hurn exhibition. I was also part of a groundbreaking exhibition of mobile phone photography 'All Tomorrow's Pictures' at London's Institute of Contemporary Art in 2007. I have photographed artists, actors and chefs while taking promotional stills for various clients. â€‹I am a member of Godalming Photographic Club
and the online Urban Photographers Club. Through Spontaneous Media I regually work as an editorial and portrait photographer for bunsinesses and organisations.

TELEVISION:
I am an award-winning television executive producer specialising in creating factual and documentary programming for major UK broadcasters and streamers.
My career in television started with an extra-curricular practical course at University. On graduation I sought out employment in TV production. It seems my mis-spent youth playing computer games was an advantage, when I began working on Saturday lunchtime review show 'Movies, Games and Videos' for ITV. Since that time I have made award winning documentaries and popular factual series for Amazon Prime Video, BBC1, BBC2, Channel 4, Channel 5, ITV1, ITV2, SKY, UKTV, Fiver, Discovery, The Crime & Investigation Network, Lifetime and Paramount+.

ETHICAL STORY TELLING:
I continue to work on documentary projects, I have a stong belief in journalistic principles and in particular duty of care and the establishment of ethical guidelines for storytelling, particually in crime retaled productions. I was part of a group of producers who set up the association of true crime producers in order to provide a set of guidline for producers to follow. I continue to speak and advise on ethical storytelling to companies and industry audiences.
